Mattress tags purpose is dual in nature namely the presence of the tag is a way of confirming that the mattress is new and as a way of informing the user as regards the contents of the mattress. 
Although it is illegal for the manufacturers of mattresses to remove mattress tags, the buyer of the mattress is well within his rights to remove the mattress tag if he is the ultimate user and is not going to sell the mattress further. Therefore, suppose the ultimate customer removes the mattress tag from the mattress, is he liable to get punished? The answer is no because it is considered legal for the consumer to tear up the mattress tags if he so wishes.
However, another reason as to why mattress tags are said to be preserved is due to the fact that they feature a complete list of items used as filling for the mattress. This information may be particularly useful for an individual especially if he is allergic to any of the substances which have been mentioned in which case he should be extremely cautious.
Therefore, the consumer can continue to enjoy a perfectly peaceful life even after tearing the mattress tag from the mattress as many of the mattress tag jokes are meant only for manufacturers and are therefore inapplicable to the ultimate consumer. So suppose the mattress tag is removed from the mattress, the consumer has nothing to fear in terms of the law.
